A few days ago, before the turn of the New Year, I publically announced my 2015 goals/resolutions/bucket list items via twitter. Please note that they are all running related goals.

2015 running goals:

  • Set new PBs (Personal Bests).
  • Train for the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon (56km).
  • Don’t get injured.

New PBs

2014 was a great year (running and travel wise). Much to my surprise I managed to set PBs for nearly every running category (10, 21, 30 and 42km). My improvement was significant. I went from completing a half-marathon in 2:09 to 2:01. That’s a new PB of 8 whole minutes. And it is due to this massive drop in numbers that I truly believe I am capable of more.

And I was right. On Sunday I ran the Bay to Bay 30km and completed it in 3:08. That’s a PB of 11 minutes. Booyah.

Short notes on the race

I was initially anxious about driving to the race. With most races my dad picks me up (and makes me toast for breakfast). I leave the logistics of how and when to get there entirely up to him. This wasn’t happening for this race. I would need to rely on myself. I would need to arrive at the race ON TIME and possibly PARALLEL PARK in a narrow, hilly street. Cue all the nerves.

But I did it. And I picked up Fahiema. Fahiema: “Sid is picking me up at 05:00 tomorrow. I set my alarm for 04:50. I love a challenge.”

The 30km race route started at Camps Bay, snaked down to Hout Bay and then looped back to Camps Bay. The 30km started at 06:00. There was also a 15km which started at Hout Bay and ended at Camps Bay. The 15km started at 07:30. At some point the 30km runners would converge with the 15km runners. For me that point was the 18km mark. And holy crap, did it feel amazing to overtake some of the 15km runners.

The non-running related goals:

  • Be a little more vulnerable, open and brave. Do the things that scare me. (Note: Everything scares me.)
  • Dance at Juan and Dizzy’s wedding until my feet bleed.
  • Do whatever I can to ensure that Fahiema’s wedding is a little less stressful.
  • Go hot air ballooning in Turkey.
  • Save up enough cash to go snowboarding in Europe for my birthday.

Lately, my days have been consumed with work, running, binge watching “House of Cards” (Kevin Spacey is so good) and chatting to the occasional cute boy.

Recent Whatsapp conversation with Fahiema:
Me: I just chatted to a cute boy. Two minutes after talking to him I realised that I had avocado all over my face.
Fahiema: LOL! What’s wrong with him? Totally an invitation for him to come and lick the avocado off your face, right?

Anyway, here’s a recent photo I took at Oblivion, which is one of my all-time favourite hangouts.

Oh and if you have the time, you should totally check out the “I, too, am Harvard” photo campaign. The campaign tries to highlight the voices of black students at Harvard.

Couchsurfing.org is a social networking website that allows registered members to connect with strangers from every part of the world, and request accommodation in their city.

Recently on the Couchsurfing website, a user asked if there were “any strippers or erotic entertainers with a couch?”

Fahiema’s reply: My 74 year old pa has Alzheimer’s. He strips often and has a couch. Let me know if you’re interested…

This weekend was spent eating Nutella straight from the jar, running my first half-marathon in weeks, watching a Jimmy Carr stand-up comedy DVD and “botanizing”.

Jimmy Carr

“I once fucked a woman with one leg.”

Pause.

“I should have used my cock.”

He then goes on to mime using his one leg to fuck a woman.

Half-marathon

I ran my first half-marathon on Saturday. At the 4km mark I was lucky enough to witness a guy take a dump behind a tree. I must admit that I really admire his technique. Feet firmly on the ground, hands on knees and arse lifted towards the heaven. It was a sight to behold.

When I relayed the above story to Fahiema, she asked, “Was it a runner?”

Me: What? Are you talking about the person or the consistency of his stool?

Anyway, the race did not go well. I was hoping to set a new personal best (anything under 2:08), but was struck by pins and needles and could barely keep up with the sub 2:15 pacesetter.

Books

I am currently reading, “A splendid thousand sun” by Khaled Hosseni. He’s the very same guy who brought us “The kite runner”.

If I were a girly-girl, the type of girl to cry EVERY time she watched an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the type of girl who knows the name of every member of the Backstreet Boys, then I would confess to being addicted to Tribakery’s Mint Mocha. But I’m not. (Lies!) So I won’t. (I already have.)

Instead we (me and my various personalities) will talk about my recent trip to Golden Gate Highlands National Park; a trip I’d been looking forward to for WEEKS.

Here follows a short account of my trip:

  • I’d gone to GGHNP to showcase my department’s website at a national conference. Mid-way through my presentation, I noticed that the timekeeper was signaling that I only had 5 minutes left. Being a undiagnosed sufferer of Tourette’s, I replied with “Oh shit”, much to the amusement of 170 fellow attendees. I will now forever be known as the “Shit” woman. My parents would be so proud.
  • GGHNP has nothing on Kruger National Park. During a 2 hour drive with Mad Phoenix, we spotted a grand total of 2 bokkies. (Confession: At one point we thought they were rhinos …)
  • During the conference we heard a troop of baboons making a commotion.

Fahiema: What’s that?

Me: My stomach.

Fahiema: Really?

Yes, really and JLo comes to me for fashion advice.

  • There’s nothing like four days in the Free State to make you appreciate Cape Town.

This weekend I…

  • Attended Juan and Dizzy*’s housewarming. The theme was ‘embrace your stereotype’. Naturally I turned up as a terrorist. I wore a scarf and a jilbab and strapped a clock to my chest. I’d hoped that the clock would clearly represent a bomb. Unfortunately some made the assumption that I’d actually turned up as the “Girl, whose biological clock is ticking”.
  • Went dragon boat racing with my running club. So. Much. Fun. Seriously. I’m actually considering organizing this for my 30th birthday.
  • Bid goodbye to the lovely Mr Schnapps and Dark Knight, who leave for Austria in a couple of days. Since it might be YEARS before they return to Cape Town, they have been gracious enough to extend an invite to visit them. 24 hours later and I’ve already Googled the crap out of Slovenia and Italy, two of the countries I might call on before heading to Austria.

The last of the Kruger Instagram photos. Clockwise from top left: proof that I entered Mozambique, Marabou Stork, water lily, Fahiema giving Kim a makeover.

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any cell phone pics of the really cool animals – vultures, cheetahs, leopards, rhinos, hippos, honey badgers etc. The only animal we didn’t spot on our trip was lions. Oh and wild dogs.

Books

I’ve only managed to read one book this month – Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I’ve also started reading the second book in the fantasy series, A Clash of Kings; and Q&A by Vikas Swarup. The novel, Q&A was adapted into the movie, Slumdog Millionaire.

Desserts

Unfortunately I haven’t attempted a new dessert recipe this month. I did however bake some Double Chocolate and Cranberry cookies, which has become a specialty of mine. And I’ve also been asked to bake the following items for my sister: Red Velvet Cupcakes and Cappuccino Muffins. And my mom was kind enough to save a peanut butter cookie recipe for me and INSIST that I make them.

Travel

I spent 9 days in Kruger National Park with Fahiema and Cougar. We also managed to travel across the border into Mozambique (some of us illegally). We spent all of 10 minutes in Mozambique before heading back.

Clockwise from top left: Elephants, Yellow-billed Hornbill, reflection in the side  view mirror, Zebra crossing.

Clockwise from top left: Vervet Monkey, Impala Lily, Giraffe, and photo of plane taken at Cape Town International Airport.

Will upload some more pictures soon.

Love you!

The last of Juan’s birthday pics. We celebrate his birthday by having pizza at Massimo’s, before heading off to Pirates for some debauchery.
